I took the photographs at Joyce's home in North London. This felt like the most appropriate and interesting place to make a portrait of her.
My approach was simply to meet Joyce, see where she lived, and get a sense of her. I tried to connect with her as much as possible, to get a sense of her life, and to tell her about mine. I responded very immediately and simply to these things in thinking about how to make a portrait.
I guess it was strange to be photographing another person who was born on the African continent, in London. I am very used to working at home in South Africa where I encounter many people from many different parts of Africa. But the dynamic was very different in London where I was far less at home than Joyce. This was interesting and refreshing for me.
It was an honour to be involved in what I think is a great project. I am sure that the collected photographs will give a fantastic sense of the thing about London that I love the most – the feeling that it truly is a home to so many different people.
