I left Rwanda in 1994, fleeing the genocide, and went to live in Belgium. I came to the UK to train and work as an actor. After having trained in Birmingham, an acting job brought me to London. It was a long contract so I moved to London permanently. I used to think I was just passing by, now I think I might stick around.
I love the UK, I love London, no doubt about it. Does that make me a Londoner? You tell me. My first time ever in London and I'm on my way to see Three Sisters at the National Theatre. I've come over to audition for drama schools and I'm finishing the day by watching a play for a tenner (!) at the famous National Theatre.
A bus screeches to a halt, I hop in, with my change. The driver looks at my hand, then at me. He's sweating so much I can barely see his eyes. "You must buy your ticket at the machine" he says, gesturing me to hop off. I say "ok" and leap to the machine, get a ticket, turn around expecting the bus to be waiting for me but it's long gone.
