I met Juan Carlos and his wife Petronela in Trafalgar Square. I was really happy about shooting someone from Paraguay, not just because I'm from Argentina, but because I visited that country many years ago and the generosity of the people was overwhelming.
We immediately started to talk about how and when he arrived in the UK, and what kind of work he does (he's a cook), the usual. Speaking the same language is always great, but I soon realised that they both spoke Guarani, an indigenous language of South America. So they could comment about anything in front of me without me understanding, which made our time more fun.
I shot on 5x4 and when I first got the camera out the whole conversation was about the technicalities of the camera and film. Juan Carlos was a great sitter, he knew what to do naturally, and he is very charismatic so I couldn’t resist taking one portrait with my iPhone Polaroid application. We had a little walk in central London and then they invited me to a BBQ at one of his friend's houses. Unfortunately I was unable to attend as I had to return to Manchester, but we are still in touch.
