I was travelling around Europe for six months and when my money ran out, I came to live in London. That was in 2004. My grandparents are English and my parents are travel agents, so I always knew I wanted to come over here. Now I own a pay-as-you-go dance and fitness studio.
But what I remember at first are all the icons – black cabs, double decker buses, telephone boxes... the grand old buildings and that everything was so tall. I love walking through the markets on a clear day and finishing up in the park or finding new cocktail bars. London's got something infectious about it. There is nowhere like it when the sun comes out and people hit the streets. The street parties with all the patriotic bunting are something else.

The shoot took place outside Frame studios in Shoreditch, where Joan works. I liked the urban, dark location with the new, overland train running in the background. Joan has an amazing amount of positive, over-flowing buzzing energy that I tried to capture in the portrait. It was a rare step outside the studio environment that I normally use.
