I had decided to move and found an interesting company to work for in Singapore. Their HQ was in London so I came to interview here first. What I remember when moving here is people being gentle and polite, while maintaining a certain force of character and intentionality. I remember sitting at the pub and having no-nonsense service, and delicious full English (breakfast) in Turkish-run greasy spoons.
Most of all, I remember feeling instantly at home, in a way I have never really felt before in my life. I've now set myself a strict diet of three cultural activities a week. The beautiful thing is that it's possible to ride this train for free most of the time. This abundance and accessibility is my favourite thing about London.
I am in a deeply amorous relationship with the city. I love it, and it loves me, and I know we'll always be a part of each other's life. It came as a surprise that Olivia (Arthur) happened to have recently brought back a traditional garment (the Boubou) – still very much in use – from a recent trip to Mauritania. It was so unlikely, but that's just the kind of thing you should expect living here.
