Vitalie Musteata was a contact through my sister-in-law, who knows his wife, and she suggested he might be an interesting subject. The shoot took place in his house and garden in Walthamstow.
I like to work in unfamiliar situations, finding places or objects that enhance and influence the situation, working spontaneously and seeing a place for the first time, helps inspire freshness. Much of my portrait work features my own family and friends, and I wanted to try to make a relaxed portrait showing this man in his home environment. It was quite a challenge to walk into someone's home, and make a portrait that somehow reflects their true personality. I want to make portraits that offer the viewer a chance to understand the sitter.
I make most of my portraits using film and my Mamiya 6x7. I am comfortable with this format and using film creates the magic of not knowing what the pictures will be like, long after the event.
I live in Hackney. The East End of London has changed radically over the past few years in the run up to the Olympics and I am happy to photograph someone who has recently made their home here.
