I usually like to know something about my sitters so that there is a germ of a relationship going, some semblance of trust between subject and camera that might inform the final photograph. Over the years I've evolved a simple approach to photographing people either in the street or at home using a minimal set up and a very straightforward technique.
Since I was traveling and there was a sense of urgency about the shoot, I shot on digital, although, normally when time allows I still prefer to shoot on film.
I found Baindu to be a very sympathetic sitter, and she gave me the time to try out different locations in her house. We both belong to those people who have come from elsewhere to make London home, so in that way the project provided us with a unique opportunity to meet and at the same time to make that meeting public. It's what photography does best, in my view, and I was very happy to be involved in The World in London project as it's a reflection of my own lived experiences.
