I came to London because it was my dream second city to live in. My initial memory of London is the beautiful architecture and the politeness of the nation. I was working in the retail industry and as a travel agent. Now I am a full-time mother. I would call myself a Londoner, meaning I am accepted in the community and I am very proud of being a Londoner and British. Being photographed was wonderful. Most important of all was the purpose of it – to represent my birth country, and also London, was the most amazing experience for me.

I took Tehetna's portrait close to her Victorian terraced house in her West London neighbourhood. It was relevant to me to develop and discuss the idea for the portrait together with the sitter. The location I chose was in the sitter's actual and familiar neighbourhood. When I first visited Tehetna to discuss the shoot I found her in a living room full of people: her two kids, her husband and parents in law. Her roots are Ethiopian and her husband is Polish. They regularly fly into Berlin (where I am based) from where they continue by car their journey to Western Poland to visit relatives. I found this interlacing of origins and places fascinating.
