The shoot took place in the beautiful Fulham Palace Meadow Allotments. After working on my book Allotments I suspected that there would be people from various countries gardening.
I spent an idyllic Summer’s day wandering around the site chatting to the growers about their plots, explaining what I was up to and finding out if they knew any plot owners from other nations who I might be able to photograph. In the end this was slightly redundant as Pedro had a bloody great Spanish flag on his plot.
Allotments are thought of as a very British idea but as you walk around them you can sometimes spot different cultures by what and how they are grown. I like the idea that those who may not have grown up with the idea of allotments, have taken them and added a twist to this most British of ideas.
London is British but its identity has changed as it has welcomed in others so that now the world's nationalities that make up the London population is one of the city's defining characteristics.
