This photograph of Joanna was taken at Mudchute Park on the Isle of Dogs in Tower Hamlets. The park was an area of derelict land where the soil dredged during the creation of Millwall Dock was dumped in the 19th century. The local people took over the site in the 1970s and created the park. Allotments were made and animals introduced creating a little pastoral idyll in the middle of one of the most deprived areas of inner London.
When I first came to live in the area, Canary Wharf had recently been developed and consisted of just one single tower. Gradually the docks got filled in and more banks moved their headquarters there. Joanna was working as my assistant at the time. I photographed Joanna in lots of different parts of the park; a copse of trees with cow parsley, an elevated path with lilac overhanging, a backlit bridle path with dandelion clocks in the air.
I love this view of Canary Wharf, the contrast between the rural setting of the park on which sheep, cattle and horses graze, and the view of the financial district, a mini city in itself.
