It was extremely difficult to find Linda, my sitter from the Cape Verde, nestled away in a proudly kept flat in North London.
Cape Verde is a small group of islands off the west coast of Africa. I scouted her flat for natural light, where she lives with her husband and sister, and found the best spot. Linda appeared and we discussed the project and what I would like to do. I took a few shots with my 5x4 camera to break the ice, we chatted some more and Linda relaxed. Then I brought out the 6x7 and shot a few rolls of film just while we were talking. That’s where the final picture comes from.
After packing everything away, Linda made some traditional Cape Verde food, and kindly offered us a beer to go with it. We talked and ate, mostly about Cape Verde, Italy (which is where she lived for a while) and cultural differences in general. My assistant and I showed our gratitude for their humbleness and our welcomed intrusion, and Jonas (Linda's husband) gave us a lift back to the station just as their friends arrived to watch the football.
