My portrait was made at a dance studio in London where Catalina trained. I usually really try to ensure the locations have some additional meaning to a portrait. In the end it was more a question of finding enough quiet, enough light, and enough space. We managed to find the simplest of solutions to create the photograph between us.
I'm happy to make images of people who express their creativity physically. It's partly because they always seem to have a certain patience when it comes to having their image made. Our meeting was brief, but I do remember both her movements and stillness before the camera.
My image was made using a large format camera set on a tripod. I like the slowness of this way of making portraits. It gives both myself and the sitter a chance to prepare before the moment of its making.
I guess I like the idea of The World in London quite simply because I really appreciate seeing and knowing that the world is in London. I think there is no other city like it.
