I found Rupi through the Bangladeshi Embassy in London. They were very helpful there and we had quite a few cups of tea in order to discuss the project.
The actual shoot took place in Regent's Park about a week after the last snow of 2011 had fallen. I felt that the winter scene would make an interesting backdrop to the sari that Rupi was going to wear. Visually here was a difference in the two cultures – the frosty landscape and the saturated colour of the sari.
I usually visualise a photograph for some time before I take it and it's interesting what aspects are realised in the final result. For me, in this image, there are also visual references to a well-known folktale.
